Inlays & Onlays Timberlands Dental Care

Why would I need inlays or onlays?

If a heavily decayed tooth requires more than a filling to be repaired to it's original, a porcelain inlay or onlay may be a suitable restoration option for our patients here at Timberlands Dental Care in Red Deer, Alberta. Compared to bonded fillings, inlays and onlays treat more of the tooth’s structure. However, compared to crowns, they don’t restore the entire tooth’s visible surface if compared. For this reason, inlays and onlays could fall in the middle of the dental restoration spectrum.

Porcelain inlays and onlays treatments can be used for a number reasons which could include:

  • Repairing teeth that are decayed
  • Restoring teeth that are damaged
  • Strengthening weak back teeth
  • Fixing teeth that have been previously restored but has been damaged somehow
  • Improving a tooth’s appearance
  • Making your smile colour balanced

How are Dental Inlays & Onlays Different?

Inlays mainly treat the inner cusps of a tooth while onlays treat one or more of the tooth’s cusps so cover a wider surface area. For this particular reason, onlays could be sometimes referred to as partial crowns.

Similar to our dental crowns, inlays and onlays are made of porcelain which makes these dental restorations a strong, durable, and attractive choice for your teeth. The porcelain material strengthens the existing tooth structure and protects it from fracture.

The material is also stain-resistant which means that the restorations stay whiter for longer periods of time.
